Member Feature: Mimi's Zero Waste Market - Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce

Today's featured member, Co-Founder Heather Williams at Mimi's Zero Waste Market, said the market makes it easier to live with less plastic. It sells bulk organic dry goods, baking ingredients, spices and teas, along with bulk soaps, sunscreen and other household items with little to no packaging. It encourages customers to bring their own clean, dry containers to purchase as much or as little as they would like.

To what do you attribute your business' success?

Our customers appreciate that we offer a different option to conventional shopping and excessive plastic packaging. The eco-conscious consumers of Seattle are looking for ways to reduce the amount of trash they produce, and reducing food waste and packaging is a great start. We also work with an amazing roster of Pacific Northwest suppliers who share our concern for the environment and make great products, including Rue Sante skin care, Salon Solids hair care, Soap & Clay cleaning and skin care, Hummingbird Wholesale Foods, Brown Family BBQ Sauce, Noir Lux Candle Co., Oregon Soap Company, and Handmade LaConner.  We have more than 150 products (and growing!) in our little 500-square-foot Crown Hill store.

How is your business active in your community?

We have a strong commitment to serving our local north-end community. In this, our first year of operation, Mimi's Zero Waste Market has participated in several events including FundaMental Fest and Rainbow Hop with the Phinney Neighborhood Association, and the Crown Hill Grillage and Summer Street Festival sponsored by the nascent Crown Hill Village Association. Mimi's was a sponsor of the Edible Garden Tour this year, which is organized by Sustainable Ballard, and we have donated auction items for two local public school events.

Are there partnerships you are/your company is currently looking for?

We believe that every neighborhood should have a store like Mimi's that allows you to bring your own reusable containers to buy kitchen staples, cleaning supplies, skin and hair care, along with low-waste options like compostable sponges and bamboo toothbrushes and dental floss - all without driving across town. If there are other businesses with a little extra floor space, even just for occasional pop-ups, or property owners who would like to bring this option to their neighborhood, let us know.

Thank you to Mimi's Zero Waste Market for being part of the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce network.
